The Lonzino di Fico is an ancient way of preserving figs that is traditional of Le Marche. Ours is made by artisan chocolatier Paolo Mencarelli in Castelplanio

In October, when the fresh figs have dried, Paolo mixes them with Mistrà (local aniseed liqueur), almonds, walnuts, star anise and sapa, a cooked grape must. The paste is then wrapped in fig leaves and tied to be eaten throughout the winter.

The lonzino is excellent sliced and served with cheese and cold meats or as a fabulous, energy filled snack at any time of the day.

INGREDIENTS Figs (82%), Mistra, almonds, walnuts, anise seeds, aniseed liquer (hydrated alcohol, natural spices), rum
